Hola Angeles! Muchas gracias por la newsletter :)) es muy interesante! Como siempre tengo algunas preguntas para ti!
🏳 ¡Hola, Sal! ¡Gracias a ti! Me alegro de que te guste. 😊 ¡Vamos a ver tus preguntas!
============================================
1. suelen = usually ? (3rd person form) (I thought 'Siempre' = usually)??
🏳 Yes, that`s 3rd person, plural form. Whenever we use this verb, it could be translated as "I, you, he... usually + infinitive". So "suelen" can be translated as "they usually eat, sleep, etc..." (Oh, no. "Siempre" = "Always")
============================================
2.llevas paraguas
llevas =take but your English translation stated ' have' ? En espanol puedo hablar 'llevo la paragua" por ejemplo
🏳 Oh, yes, in fact "lleva el paraguas" could be "take the umbrella with you", "carry it with you" somehow :-). You are right, as "llevar" can also we used as "to take".
And yes, you can say "Llevo el paraguas" ("paraguas" is a masculine word, don't ask me why! :-D )
============================================
3. acabaras (=you will be finished?) - this expression is used for 'soaked' in the rain? can you write a sentence where it is used in another (non-weather) context?)
🏳 Sure! "acabarás (tú), is a present tense form of "acabar". In this context it's used as "to end up".
Por ejemplo: Si corres demasiado acabarás cansado. (If you run too much you will end up tired. )
============================================
4. van despacio
(can I use this expression for other contexts e.g traffic)
🏳 ¡Sí, por supuesto!
"traffic "en ingles = plural meaning (e.g many cars in a queue)
ejemplo en espanol: hay muchas trafico ...van despacio!
🏳 En español, "el tráfico" es singular. Entonces: "Hay mucho tráfico... va despacio"
============================================
5. Translation/ synonym check:
la mejor parte = the most part (alternatives: the majority/the most)
Por ejemplo: en mis vacaciones la mejor parte hice muchas actividades relajante
correcta? --> No, porque "mejor" = better. You should use here: "mayor", "la mayor parte del tiempo".
🏳 ¡Atención! We have "mejor" and "mayor" and they have different meanings:
- mejor = better
- mayor - most, bigger, great
============================================
6. Expression (not only, but also)
solo = only
no solo xxx pero tambien = not only but also..
🏳 "no solo" xxx "sino también" (In Spanish we don't say "but", but "sino" to express this.
ejemplo correcta? :: "Me gusta no solo vivo tinto pero tambien vino blanco"
🏳 I'd say: "Me gusta no solo el vino tinto sino también el vino blanco."
============================================
7. incluir (ever conjugated?, or the same form whatever the subject/number
🏳 "Incluir" is and infinitive, and you can use it either as infinitive or conjugated:
- Voy a incluir plátanos en la lista de la compra.
- Incluiré plátanos en la lista de la compra.
============================================
8.habitual = usual? synonym? (e.g normalmente?) any differences?
🏳 Yes, both are interchangeable. In fact II think "habitual" is more *habitual* in Spanish. :-D
============================================
9.no me apetece = i don't feel like (feel is siento, ?) - so apetece = fancy? I don't fancy?
(literal translation _?)
🏳 Oh, yes, "to feel" is "sentir", but when you use "to feel like", this is translated as "apetecer". So I guess its literal translation has nothing to do with the Spanish meaning.
============================================
10. tengo ahora una reunion (word order change possible?)
por ejemplo: tengo una reunion ahora
🏳 ¡Correcto! We can do it that way! :-)
============================================
11. quE rollo = how boring = can you give another sentence/context this could be used (is it always these two words/this form?)
🏳 Por supuesto. Yes, both are together, although you can see some variations, with same meaning: "Vaya rollo", "Menudo rollo".
Ejemplo: Esta conferencia es un rollo, no dice nada nuevo y es muy aburrida. (This conference is a bore, says nothing new and is very boring. )
============================================
12. "Sí, tengo ganas de ver a Julia."
alternative expression - correcta? por ejemplo: (tengo ganas) ver a otra lugares?
🏳 You can say: "Tengo ganas de ver otros lugares" (Not: "a otros lugares", no "a", because it is the "personal a", used to refer to people, not things or places.)
But, yes, that's the use. :-)
= is this the same as I want to see other places (quero.........etc)
🏳 Yes, could be, but it's not exactly the same. "Quiero" = I want, and "Tengo ganas" = I feel like".
============================================
13. que raro = how rare (strange)?
🏳 Yes, that's it. "How weird, strange..."
============================================
14. es el primer vez (to scotland)
or la primerA vez (difference between primer y primerA ?)
🏳 It is; "Es la primera vez". Feminine, as it goes with / qualifies "vez", and "vez" is a feminine word. (la vez).
But you can also use the masculine, if the word it qualifies is masculine, i.e. "el hombre".
"Es el primer hombre que veo hoy." ("He's the first man I've seen today." )
Muchas Gracias Angeles!!!!!
🏳 ¡De nada, Sal! ¡Espero que te ayude a ti y a todos los lectores! 😊
